Blue angular forms and slender reflected trees beneath a yellow sun.

James Allen Swan's abstract painting of blue triangular forms beneath a yellow sun

Artwork: James Allen Swan (jas), a blue-and-yellow geometric gallery study.

By evening, the yellow sun has begun to look suspicious. It hangs above a set of blue triangles that could be roofs, mountains, or the first pieces of a map nobody has finished drawing.

I have a weakness for paintings that decline to give directions. There is no neat road through this one, no arrow pointing toward the sensible answer. The shapes offer possibilities and leave the rest to the person standing in front of them.

All day we are told to make things fit. The window must fit the wall. The schedule must fit the clock. Even an idea is expected to fit its little box before anyone will let it out into the street.

But blue has other plans. It folds into angles, reaches toward the light, and makes an architecture out of uncertainty. The yellow sun is not an instruction. It is a witness.

Perhaps that is why I keep returning to the unfinished places. A blank corner of paper still has room for a different beginning. A line drawn at the wrong angle may turn out to be the only honest line in the room.

Tonight the studio is quiet. Somewhere, an artist is coaxing a painting window into a better shape, making room for the hand rather than demanding that the hand accommodate the machinery. That, too, is a kind of art.

Leave the map unfinished. Keep the sun. Tomorrow someone might find a door in those blue triangles.
