Today’s question: How do you define success in life?

Abstract coral, slate-blue and charcoal watercolor with expressive black ink loops on warm-white paper, zgen_26 and jas marks.

Artwork: James Allen Swan (jas). Artist-directed digital watercolor and ink-style study, developed with AI assistance from the artist’s reference and studio protocol.

Success used to sound like an arrival: the finished room, the applause, the tidy answer. But after years of watching paintings become themselves, I trust a quieter definition.

Success is making a mark that belongs to you, even when it is crooked. It is recognizing when to add color and when to leave the paper alone. In this painting, coral seems to rise toward a charcoal cloud, while blue settles into the spaces between. Fine black lines dart and hesitate. None of them needs to win.

A painting can be full of intention without being full of paint. The untouched ground is doing work, too. So is the uncertain line. Together they remind me that success is not control over every outcome. It is the courage to begin, the patience to keep looking, and the judgment to stop before the life leaves the image.

That applies beyond the studio. A good day may be one when someone feels listened to, an old worry loosens its grip, or a small kindness goes unnoticed by everyone except the person who needed it.

So how do I define success in life? By what remains alive after the work is finished: curiosity, tenderness, freedom, and enough open space for tomorrow to surprise us.
